Fitness educator Dr. Mike Israetel has addressed the growing online conversation surrounding his midsection, claiming that his protruding abdomen is a genetic condition rather than the result of PEDs.
The discussion was fueled largely by YouTuber Luimarco, who coined the phrase “bubble gut” and has made several videos pointing out what he calls Israetel’s “bubble trouble quadruple gut bonanza life.”
In his footage breakdowns, Luimarco zooms in on clips of Israetel performing curls, rows, skull crushers, and other exercises, arguing the distended midsection is clearly visible regardless of the movement.
“And if I remember, Dr. Mike, you are lean. So this is not fat. I reckon it’s inside,” Luimarco noted.
In a recent response, Israetel addressed the matter directly. According to Luimarco’s follow-up coverage, Israetel assured viewers that the condition runs in his family and that he vividly recalls having a distended midsection since the age of seven.

He stated that he never took insulin, and that growth hormone and anabolic comp*unds are not, in his reckoning, the cause. He also pointed to DEXA scan results showing no fat and no visceral fat to support his genetic claim.

Luimarco, for his part, gave credit where credit was due. While he has been one of the most vocal critics of Israetel’s physique, he acknowledged that Israetel is actively working to address the issue. He noted that Israetel appears to be using a specially curved barbell during training, which Luimarco dubbed a “bonanza barbell,” presumably to avoid contact with his midsection during pressing movements.
“Credit is given where credit is due. Mike is paying his dues and he’s addressing this in a scientific way,” Luimarco said.
Luimarco also took the opportunity to contrast Israetel’s physique with his own, pointing out that despite being a decade older and of a smaller build, he lifts comparable weights without any visible midsection protrusion.
“I’m a natural dude. I am older than you by a decade. I’m also smaller yet I lift more than you naturally. No bubble gut.”
Whether or not the genetic explanation satisfies critics in the bodybuilding community remains to be seen.
