Fitness coach Lyle McDonald has publicly criticized Renaissance Periodization founder Dr. Mike Israetel. In a recent video, McDonald accused Israetel of promoting misleading fitness advice while relying heavily on PEDs and cosmetic procedures to achieve his physique.
McDonald’s commentary focuses on what he perceives as contradictions between Renaissance Periodization’s marketing message and Israetel’s actual methods. According to McDonald, Israetel uses numerous PEDs, including retatride for his most recent competition. Despite this pharmaceutical assistance, McDonald claims Israetel “still didn’t get into shape and then blamed his tan.”
The criticism intensifies when addressing Israetel’s extensive surgical interventions. In his own words, Israetel acknowledged undergoing significant cosmetic procedures: “A huge limiting factor of mine was that like I just had love handles. And when they weren’t filled with fat anymore, they were filled with water. And then they just look like s**t all the time. And I was like, ‘Forget this. I can just get them cut out.’ So I did.”
Israetel has openly discussed plans for multiple additional surgeries. He described his abdominal concerns, stating, “No matter what body fat I have, I have a big gut just plain old. And it’s really just a genetic laxity of the abdominal wall. Has nothing to do with muscle strength and none of that.” His solution involves plication procedures and installing “a polymer sheath around your entire like a corset sheath and then it constantly keeps your waist to the size that most people of my leanness have.”
Perhaps most notably, Israetel mentioned considering an extreme procedure: “I have been thinking about potentially going to that next level of surgery and getting my two bottom ribs broken inwards to have an even cooler, even smaller waist. Ideally, I’d like to have a tiny waist. I think it’s magical.”
McDonald’s central argument challenges Renaissance Periodization’s positioning as a science-based fitness company. He questions whether their training app can deliver results comparable to Israetel’s physique when that physique apparently requires substantial pharmaceutical assistance and multiple surgical interventions.
