UFC President Dana White has confirmed that he personally contributed to Olympian and MMA star Ben Askren’s medical fundraiser. He talked about it during the press conference following UFC Nashville. The admission came after a reporter directly asked White about the organization’s support for Askren during his recovery.
When questioned about whether the UFC planned to support Askren “maybe financially” in his recovery, White initially responded with reluctance to discuss such matters publicly. “I usually don’t talk about that stuff, but yes, I did. I did,” White confirmed to the assembled media.
The UFC CEO went on to explain that the organization reached out to Askren’s family immediately upon learning of his situation. “We were, um, we reached out to his wife as soon as we heard, and told her if there’s anything you need and and yes, I did. I did,” White stated during the press conference.
White emphasized his preference for keeping such charitable contributions private, explaining his general policy of discretion when it comes to personal assistance. “I just don’t like talking about that. It’s just that’s between us,” he said, indicating that he typically keeps such matters confidential between himself and the recipients.
Ben Askren, a former Bellator welterweight champion who competed in the UFC from 2019 to 2021, has been dealing with health issues that prompted the medical fundraiser. Askren, known for his wrestling background and brief but memorable UFC career, retired from his professional combat career following a submission loss to Demian Maia in October 2019.
The confirmation of White’s financial contribution highlights the UFC CEO’s history of supporting contenders beyond their active competition careers. While White maintains a policy of discretion regarding such personal assistance, his willingness to acknowledge his support for Askren demonstrates the organization’s commitment to fighter welfare.
Other UFC stars have also come forward to wish well for Ben Askren. Former UFC lightweight contender Jorge “Gamebred” Masvidal recently shared a heartfelt message of support for his former rival.
In an emotional video posted on social media, Masvidal addressed Askren directly. He said: “This goes out to the one and only Ben Askren. What’s up, my brothers? I know we were rivals in the ring. I just want to say, God bless you.”
Askren has been fighting a serious case of pneumonia, which led to a double lung transplant and left him on a ventilator for several weeks. As he continues his recovery, the outpouring of support from fans, fighters, and the UFC itself is very heartwarming.
