Irish politicians have strongly criticized UFC star Conor McGregor following his controversial White House visit on Monday, where he spoke with Donald Trump about issues concerning his homeland.
During the visit, McGregor expressed strong criticism of the Irish government, stating, “Our government abandoned the voices of the people of Ireland. Our money is being spent overseas on issues that have nothing to do with the Irish people. It’s time the people in America are made aware of what’s going on Ireland, what is going on Ireland is a travesty. Our government is a government with zero action and zero accountability.”
Ireland’s Taoiseach Micheal Martin swiftly responded to McGregor’s remarks via social media. “St. Patrick’s Day around the world is a day rooted in community, humanity, friendship and fellowship,” Martin wrote. “Conor McGregor’s remarks are wrong, and do not reflect the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, or the views of the people of Ireland.”
Other Irish political figures joined in the criticism, with politician Colum Eastwood stating on social media, “Conor McGregor has never been elected to anything, he doesn’t represent the Irish people. In fact, we’re all pretty embarrassed by him.”
In response to the backlash, McGregor defended his position, particularly regarding safety concerns in Ireland’s capital. “Dublin City has gone from one of the most safest Cities in Europe to one of the most dangerous,” he declared. “Every available metric shows the Government have failed the people of Ireland.”
The exchange has highlighted growing tensions between the sports star and Irish political leadership, particularly concerning domestic policies and the direction of the nation.
