In a heartwarming revelation, newly-crowned UFC champion Sean O’Malley shared the personal message he received from UFC icon Conor McGregor after his resounding victory over Aljamain Sterling.
O’Malley’s momentous victory over Sterling transpired during the second round of their title clash at UFC 292 held in Boston this past weekend. The defining moment came as O’Malley unleashed a right-hand strike. This paved the way for a relentless ground assault that culminated in him seizing the UFC bantamweight title.
Among the flood of congratulations that poured in, legendary rapper Snoop Dogg extended his congratulations to O’Malley.
Adding to the chorus of well-wishers was none other than UFC icon Conor McGregor, who slid into Sean O’Malley’s DMs on social media.
In a candid interview with Pat McAfee, O’Malley shared the contents of his conversation with McGregor. He said: “Conor messaged me on Instagram for the first time. He said, ‘baby we did it’ and I said, ‘we sure f**king did’.”
O’Malley went on to say: “I said ‘[are] you main eventing in December? I’m [the] co-main event?’ … All he replied was ‘shot caller’, so I don’t know what that means. I’m hoping that’s a yes in f**king Irish.”
But the anticipated December return of McGregor seems uncertain due to his USADA predicament. McGregor’s much-awaited comeback to the Octagon was set to take place by the year’s end against Michael Chandler. The bout had garnered considerable attention, particularly after their previous encounter on the TUF reality series.
McGregor has been absent from the Octagon since his significant loss to Dustin Poirier in July 2021.
For O’Malley, he went into his bout with Sterling despite having a rib injury. Looking ahead, talks of a rematch between Sean O’Malley and Marlon Vera in 2023 have surfaced.
O’Malley’s previous encounter with Chito Vera resulted in his first professional defeat via TKO at UFC 252 in 2020. But since that setback, the bantamweight standout has managed to secure five consecutive wins. This culminated into his remarkable title win over Sterling.
