In a recent series of statements, MMA superstar Conor McGregor has voiced his concerns about the current state of mixed martial arts, suggesting that the sport’s quality has declined due to an overreliance on grappling techniques.
McGregor, who achieved a significant personal milestone by receiving his Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt from long-time coach John Kavanagh last year, paradoxically criticized the prevalence of grappling-heavy bouts in modern MMA. The Irish star, known for his striking prowess, expressed frustration with what he perceives as excessive clinching and stalling tactics employed by some competitors.
In a video shared on social media, McGregor was seen mocking a recent Professional Fighters League (PFL) bout between Fabian Edwards and Johnny Eblen, which featured extended grappling exchanges. This public display of dissatisfaction aligns with his earlier comments lamenting the impact of such strategies on the sport’s mainstream appeal.
“The product is suffering because of it,” McGregor stated, arguing that if not for the established brand name, MMA would struggle to maintain its audience. He went on to claim that the sport has already lost its mainstream, casual viewership.
In contrast, McGregor praised bare-knuckle boxing, describing it as “the future” of combat sports. He highlighted its fast-paced nature and the inability of competitors to avoid direct confrontation. “There is zero feeling of an event dragging on that is ever so prevalent in today’s MMA,” he remarked, emphasizing the intensity and immediacy of bare-knuckle contests.
It’s worth noting that McGregor’s enthusiasm for bare-knuckle boxing may not be entirely impartial, as he is a part-owner of the Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship (BKFC), a leading organization in the sport.
Despite his criticisms, McGregor’s connection to MMA remains strong. The former two-division UFC champion is expected to make his return to the octagon in the coming year, following his recovery from a toe injury that prevented him from competing at UFC 303.
McGregor’s comments have sparked debate within the MMA community, with some fans agreeing with his assessment while others defend the importance of grappling in the sport. As one of the most influential figures in MMA, McGregor’s opinions carry significant weight and may influence discussions about the future direction of the sport.
