Islam Makhachev, the reigning UFC lightweight champion, has been thriving in the octagon with the guidance of his mentor and former champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov. Despite Khabib’s retirement from mixed martial arts, his presence in Makhachev’s corner has proven invaluable, making outs seem “easier,” according to the current champion.
At UFC 302, Khabib accompanied Makhachev to the octagon for his bout against Dustin Poirier. The former champ had flown in from Russia two weeks prior to the event and assisted in training Makhachev, providing his wealth of experience and expertise.
During the rounds, Khabib was seen constantly offering instructions to Islam, and although the champion follows his own instincts, having such a knowledgeable presence by his side undoubtedly simplifies the task at hand.
In a recent interview , AKA’s Javier Mendez spoke about the invaluable advice Khabib provides not only during the bout but also in between rounds. The duo has become a formidable force in the MMA world, dispatching opponents like Dustin Poirier with ease.
Looking ahead, Makhachev aims to make history by challenging for the welterweight title, moving up in weight to face the reigning champion, Leon Edwards. While Edwards welcomes the potential matchup, he believes Makhachev still has work to do in his current division before attempting to become a two-division champion.
Regardless of the challenges that lie ahead, Makhachev and Khabib’s unwavering determination is undeniable. And if recent statements are any indication, Khabib will continue to play a pivotal role in Islam’s corner for his upcoming fights.
In Mendez’ own words, “He will be there for all Islam’s next fights, and it makes me so happy to have such a great human being, such a great corner, such a great coach with me.”
