Canelo Alvarez open to boxing McGregor: And then we show boxing is better

Boxing sensation Canelo Alvarez has set tongues wagging in the combat sports world with his recent comments about a potential matchup against UFC star Conor McGregor. The super middleweight champion, who is set to defend his WBA, WBC, and WBO titles against Edgar Berlanga this Saturday, expressed confidence in his ability to outclass the Irish mixed martial artist in the boxing ring.

When asked about the possibility of facing McGregor, Alvarez’s response was both dismissive and intriguing. “I know, and then we show boxing is better,” he stated, adding that such a bout would be “Easy, easy, way easy money.” The Mexican champion’s words have ignited speculation among fans and pundits alike about a potential cross-discipline showdown.

McGregor, a former two-division UFC champion, is no stranger to the boxing world. In August 2017, he stepped into the ring with Floyd Mayweather Jr. in a high-profile bout that lasted until the 10th round. However, Alvarez believes he could dispatch McGregor much more swiftly, claiming he could end the contest “At the time I want. One round, two rounds, three rounds, whatever I want.”

While the prospect of an Alvarez-McGregor matchup remains hypothetical, it has already sparked debates about the comparative merits of boxing and mixed martial arts. Alvarez’s comments suggest a desire to prove boxing’s superiority, which could add an extra layer of intrigue to any potential bout.

In the meantime, Alvarez remains focused on his upcoming title defense against Berlanga at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Interestingly, this event will take place on the same night as UFC 306 at the nearby Sphere, setting up a head-to-head clash between boxing and MMA for viewers’ attention.

When questioned about the scheduling conflict, Alvarez appeared unfazed, stating, “Competition is good. May and September are my days and competition is good. I don’t do it in that way, I just focus on my team and focus on what I’m doing, and if somebody wants to do other shows, it’s fine.”
