The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have officially closed their investigation into the death of Trokon Dourash. He is a 33-year-old Edmonton mixed martial arts competitor who passed away following injuries sustained during a bout last November.
Dourash collapsed after competing in an Ultra MMA event at the Enoch Community Centre on November 23, 2024, on the Enoch Cree Nation. The RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit took charge of the case, collaborating closely with the Chief Medical Examiner to establish the cause of death and determine whether any criminal activity was involved.
In a statement released Monday, police confirmed that “the manner of death has been deemed as non-suspicious and officers have concluded their investigation.”
The tragic incident unfolded during what should have been a routine amateur competition. According to witnesses, Dourash experienced severe physical distress immediately after his match and required assistance leaving the competition area. He was then moved to a private room where medical attention was administered for approximately 40 minutes before the situation became critical.
Fellow competitors described Dourash as relatively inexperienced in mixed martial arts but noted he had shown promise in his brief time in the sport.
The circumstances surrounding the event have raised concerns among participants about the organizational standards and medical protocols in place that evening. Several attendees questioned whether adequate medical supervision was present, specifically wondering about the availability and number of doctors on-site during the competition.
Ultra Events Canada, the organization behind the competition, stated that the event “was carried out under the auspices of the Central Alberta Combat Sports Commission,” indicating it operated under official regulatory oversight.
The loss has devastated Dourash’s family, including his wife and two young children, who must now navigate life without their husband and father. His death highlights the inherent risks associated with combat sports, even at the amateur level, and the importance of comprehensive safety measures.
While the RCMP investigation has concluded without finding evidence of suspicious circumstances, the incident serves as a somber reminder of the physical demands and potential dangers faced by athletes who step into the cage, regardless of their experience level.
