A tragic incident unfolded in Thailand as a 30-year-old British man collapsed and died shortly after participating in his first-ever Muay Thai match on Friday evening.
The event took place at the Samui International Muay Thai Stadium in Koh Samui, Surat Thani province, where the unnamed British athlete was making his debut in the traditional Thai combat sport. He died wearing the Muay Thai shorts he wore during his debut.
According to local news outlet Khaosod English, the referee was forced to stop the contest during the third round after the British competitor received a significant strike to the right side of his rib cage from his opponent.
Following the conclusion of the match, the British man managed to exit the ring under his own power and removed his gloves. However, his condition rapidly deteriorated while he was unwrapping his hand bandages. Witnesses reported that he began experiencing breathing difficulties and muscle tension before collapsing.
His trainer immediately administered CPR at the scene while waiting for emergency services to arrive. The athlete was swiftly transported to Thai International Hospital, located approximately two miles from the venue.
Despite the medical team’s extensive efforts to save him, the British man was pronounced dead at around 11 PM, approximately 90 minutes after the incident began.
Thai authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death. An autopsy has reportedly been conducted at Koh Samui Hospital, and police are working with the British Embassy to notify the man’s family.
A spokesperson for the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office confirmed they are “supporting the family of a British man who has died in Thailand.”
The tragedy highlights the physical demands and potential risks associated with combat sports, even when conducted in regulated environments with proper supervision.
The Muay Thai community, both in Thailand and internationally, has been left stunned by this rare and unfortunate event during what should have been a memorable milestone in the athlete’s sporting journey.
