Comedian and podcast host Brendan Schaub found himself at the center of controversy after being ejected from his son’s Little League baseball playoff game over the weekend.
Schaub, a former mixed martial artist and current host of “The Fighter and the Kid” podcast, was removed from the game by an umpire following a disputed call at home plate. The incident, which was captured on video and quickly spread across social media, shows Schaub’s reaction after a young player was called “out” while sliding into home.
In the footage, Schaub can be heard telling the umpire that his call was “garbage,” which immediately led to his ejection. When Schaub approached the official asking, “I got ejected for saying the call was garbage?” the umpire responded, “With that language, even more so.” Schaub then used profanity as he walked away.
The former UFC competitor addressed the situation in an Instagram post on May 18, seeming unfazed by the online criticism.
“The kid was safe,” Schaub wrote alongside a shrugging emoji. “Must be a slow-ass news day in MMA when this is a headline. Also, I was the third coach this ump threw out that day. Alllllllll I said was, ‘That’s a garbage call.’ It’s the playoffs, for god sakes.”
Schaub has previously discussed on his podcast how seriously he takes his son’s sports activities, occasionally sharing updates about his children’s performances on social media.
The incident has sparked mixed reactions online. Critics have pointed to previous controversial comments Schaub made on his podcast about other children in his son’s baseball league. In one episode, he allegedly told his son regarding an opponent, “I go, ‘If this slow, fat kid gets a hit off you, this isn’t for you.'”
Meanwhile, supporters on Schaub’s Instagram post defended his passion, with one commenter writing: “A guy can’t be passionate nowadays! Good work. Rather this than some Dad being on his phone the whole time not even knowing the score of his kid’s baseball game.”
Schaub is father to two sons, with the older one participating in Little League baseball.
