Brendan Allen on beef with Vettori and coach over brother comments

Following his decisive victory over Marvin Vettori at UFC 318, Brendan Allen showed remarkable sportsmanship by extending heartfelt condolences to his opponent while revealing the personal motivation behind his compassionate response.

The middleweight bout represented more than just another contest on the UFC card. Vettori had endured the tragic loss of his brother in a house fire earlier this year, making his appearance at the event all the more significant. Allen, speaking to media after his win, demonstrated genuine empathy when addressing this devastating situation.

“I’m very sorry for him and his family. It touches my heart. My brother’s over there in the wheelchair — he wasn’t always like that, and it hurts. So I can’t imagine what it feels like to fully lose your brother,” Allen stated during the post-event press conference.

Allen went further in expressing his respect for Vettori’s decision to compete despite his grief. “My heart goes out to him and his family for that. Respect to him for coming here and still competing, ’cause I wouldn’t compete if something happened to my brother. As far as him personally, it’s up to him, man. I don’t hold any beef. It is what it is.”

However, Allen’s reconciliatory tone shifted when the discussion turned to Vettori’s coaching staff. “But f**k his coach though, my boy already f****d him up,” he declared, indicating that while he had moved past his issues with Vettori personally, tensions remained with members of his opponent’s team.

The history between Allen and Vettori dates back to their originally scheduled encounter at UFC Vegas 90 in April 2024, which never materialized due to Vettori’s injury withdrawal. After Allen defeated Chris Curtis as a replacement opponent via split decision, Vettori took to social media with harsh criticism, writing, “Allen… you looked like dog s**t, got rocked every single round.” Allen’s response was equally pointed, dismissing Vettori as irrelevant.

Their animosity escalated into a physical altercation at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, following a PFL event in August 2024. Reports indicate that Vettori attempted to strike Allen’s teammate Tuco Tokkos, prompting Allen’s intervention and resulting in a casino scuffle.

The aftermath of UFC 318 provided an unexpected moment when Dustin Poirier appeared during Allen’s media obligations. Allen respectfully acknowledged the veteran, receiving a thumbs-up gesture in return. When asked about the brief interaction, Allen revealed how Poirier serves as motivation for his continued career pursuits.

“He is one of the reasons I’m like, ‘Man, sometimes I’m like, I need to retire, man. This stuff’s hard.’ And then I’m like, ‘Look at him, it took him so long. So you just gotta keep pushing. You never know what’s on the other side.’ I was very frustrated the last time, and changes were made, and I think it showed tonight,” Allen explained.

The evening also marked Poirier’s retirement from competition after 15 years with the organization.
