Lightweight champion Devin Haney found himself in legal trouble after a night out in Hollywood. Law enforcement officers discovered a semi-automatic handgun during a routine traffic stop, leading to Haney’s arrest.
On Wednesday, Devin Haney visited Catch L.A.- a popular hotspot. TMZ reported that shortly after leaving the venue around midnight, law enforcement officers pulled over the car he was riding. This was due to an unsafe lane change and failure to use a turn signal.
During the traffic stop, the individual behind the wheel informed the officers that there was a firearm inside the vehicle. As a result, Haney and his security were asked to step out of the car. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a semi-automatic handg*n concealed beneath the driver’s seat.
Law enforcement officials clarified that no one claimed ownership of the firearm. Since the car was registered under Haney’s name, he was subsequently arrested and charged with felony possession of a concealed weapon.
After being taken into custody, Haney was released on bail in the amount of $35,000 at 8:12 a.m. on Thursday. A hearing regarding the matter is scheduled for next month.
The 30-0 boxer recently is coming off a win against Vasiliy Lomachenko. However, Lomachenko and his team are now adamantly pursuing an instant rematch because they are determined to reverse this decision.
The Lomachenko camp has gone above and above to support their position, writing letters to the IBF, WBC, WBO, and WBA. The letter states that Lomachenko must be acknowledged as the leading contender and required challenger for all major championships that the reigning undisputed champion holds.
Lomachenko’s manager Egis Klimas wrote: “This past Saturday in Las Vegas, Vasiliy Lomachenko challenged Undisputed Lightweight Champion Devin Haney in Las Vegas. The crowd at the MGM and the boxing world reacted to condemn what it believes to be an unfair and unjust decision that denied Loma his rightful victory and his lifetime goal of being undisputed champion of the world.”
“As Team Loma prepares an appeal of the decision, and in light of the highly controversial outcome of the bout, on behalf of Vasiliy Lomachenko, I ask that the IBF keep Loma as the #1 and recognize him as the mandatory contender for the title in the Lightweight Division.”
