Boxer Skye Nicolson accuses Italy’s Angela Carini of staging a publicity stunt against Imane Khelif

The Paris Olympics have been overshadowed by controversy surrounding the participation of Imane Khelif, who was disqualified by the International Boxing Association (IBA) last year for failing their gender eligibility test, but was still allowed to compete in the Olympic games.

While the IOC has raised doubts over the accuracy and protocol of the test, the IBA has defended its decision to award Khelif’s opponent, Angela Carini, a substantial sum of prize money despite her loss.

According to the IBA, Carini will receive $39,000 (£50,000), her federation will receive $19,500 (£25,000), and her coach will receive $19,500 (£25,000). IBA President Umar Kremlev stated, “Only eligible athletes should compete in the ring for the sake of safety. I could not look at her tears. I am not indifferent to such situations, and I can assure that we will protect each boxer.”

However, Australian boxer Skye Nicolson has accused Carini of staging a publicity stunt during their bout. In a statement, Nicolson said, “I feel like the thing that happened with the Italian girl was a publicity stint more than anything, and yeah, I just think people really need to look at the facts and stop jumping on the bandwagon, be a lion, not a sheep.”

Nicolson highlighted that both Khelif and Carini have been beaten by female boxers numerous times, suggesting that their performances are not indicative of any unfair advantage. “These girls have been so scrutinized by the media, and they haven’t got a big enough voice, so I want to use my platform for a positive reason,” Nicolson added.

Carini has since apologized to Khelif for the controversy surrounding their contest, stating, “All this controversy makes me sad. I’m sorry for my opponent, too. If the IOC said she can fight, I respect that decision.”

As the Paris Olympics continue, the debate surrounding Khelif’s participation and the actions of Carini and the IBA have drawn significant attention, with Nicolson’s accusations adding further complexity to the issue.
