Boxer Lemuel Silisia has tragically died just days after a title bout

The boxing community is mourning the loss of Lemuel Silisia, an Australian-based Solomon Islands boxer and father-to-be. Silisia, who had been living and working in Australia since 2021, tragically passed away just days after competing in the biggest bout of his life.

On Saturday, Silisia took part in a title bout for the World Boxing Foundation Australasian Super Lightweight Title in Tamworth, New South Wales. Despite knocking down his Australian opponent Adam Flood in the third round, Silisia ultimately lost the eight-round contest by a points decision.

Following the bout, Silisia reportedly posed for photos with fans and spoke to the media. However, in the days that followed, his family members informed his friends and followers that the talented pugilist was fighting for his life in the hospital. Tragically, Silisia’s death was announced by his family on Wednesday night, though the cause of his passing remains unclear.

Silisia’s brother, Colson, paid a heartfelt tribute on social media, explaining that after Silisia failed to respond to brain function tests, he was declared medically deceased. “His brave heart continued to fight until it eventually ceased beating today [Wednesday] at 5:24pm, when he was called to be with the Lord Jesus Christ,” Colson wrote.

The fighter, affectionately known as “Lucky” by his family, had shared his reasons for moving to Australia earlier in the year. “In the Solomons, even if you’re good at sport, to be successful it depends on who you know, rather than what you know, but Australia is a big country with lots of opportunities in sport,” he had said.

Silisia’s boxing club, One2 Boxing in Tamworth, also expressed their grief, stating, “The last few days we have been bedside with our beloved Lemuel, family and friends. Your O2B family are heartbroken and we promise your legacy will live on. Rest in peace Lems.”

As the boxing community and Silisia’s loved ones mourn his untimely passing, they hold dear the memories they shared with him and vow to preserve his spirit in their hearts. This tragic loss has left an indelible mark, and the ripples of Lemuel Silisia’s impact will continue to be felt for years to come.
