Former UFC contender and Olympian Ben Askren appears to be making significant progress in his health recovery, as evidenced by his latest video update shared on social media. In the clip, Askren’s voice sounds noticeably clearer and stronger than in previous updates, giving fans hope about his improving condition.
“It’s going pretty well, getting a lot better,” Askren says in the video, mentioning that he’s beginning to regain weight after what has clearly been a challenging medical journey.
The wrestling standout revealed he’s been hospitalized for approximately 55 days, a lengthy stay that has come with its share of setbacks. Askren expressed disappointment about a delayed discharge that was originally planned to coincide with his birthday. According to his update, one medical procedure was unsuccessful, while another worked but took longer than anticipated.
Despite these challenges, Askren maintains a positive outlook, drawing inspiration from the Stockdale Paradox referenced in Jim Collins’ book “Good to Great.” This philosophy, named after Admiral James Stockdale, who was held captive for years during the Vietnam War, emphasizes acknowledging current difficult circumstances while maintaining faith in eventual positive outcomes.
“I always try to click back to that,” Askren explained, “because yes, I’m disappointed I didn’t get out today, but maybe it’s what’s best.”
The former Bellator and ONE Championship welterweight titleholder acknowledged missing summer due to his extended hospitalization but remains grateful for his recovery progress. “I’m getting better, and I’ll see my family soon,” he added with optimism.
Askren concluded his message by expressing appreciation for the outpouring of support from fans during his health journey. “I love all the support. I appreciate it. I feel it. So many of you guys are sending messages, and it just feels really good.”
While specific details about Askren’s medical condition remain private, he indicated plans for discharge on Monday. Fans across social media have responded positively to his improved appearance and stronger voice, celebrating the visible progress in his recovery.
The 41-year-old retired from mixed martial arts competition in 2019 following a decorated career that included championship reigns in multiple major organizations and an Olympic wrestling background.
