Ariel Helwani says Jon Jones threatened him after exposing Nike ‘Merch Deal’ in 2012

Sports journalist Ariel Helwani recently shared a revealing anecdote about UFC star Jon Jones, detailing a tense interaction between the two following Helwani’s reporting on Jones’ Nike endorsement deal back in 2012.

During a recent media appearance, Helwani recounted how his reporting on the financial details of Jones’ Nike deal led to direct confrontation from the UFC icon. According to Helwani, while many fans and media outlets assumed Jones’ Nike contract was comparable to major athlete endorsements worth millions of dollars, the reality was quite different.

“I remember talking about his Nike deal, the much talked about Nike deal, and I said that it wasn’t for a lot of money. It was kind of like a merch deal, it was for like a minimal amount,” Helwani explained. “But I think when we all thought he was getting this Nike deal, he’s gonna get millions of dollars like Michael Jordan, all this stuff.”

The revelation about the deal’s modest financial terms apparently struck a nerve with Jones, who tracked down Helwani while the journalist was spending time with his family in the countryside.

“I got a call from someone who then quickly put him on the phone,” Helwani said. “He said ‘I’m never gonna talk to you again unless you tell me who told you that.'”

At the time, Helwani was still establishing himself in sports journalism, making the confrontation particularly challenging. Nevertheless, he stood firm on journalistic principles.

“I’m pretty young in the game here,” Helwani recalled thinking. “What do you want me to do here? You’re never gonna talk to me again because you want to know who my sources?”

Despite the pressure, Helwani maintained his commitment to protecting his confidential sources, a principle he views as fundamental to journalism.

“That’s another thing that I’ve always felt very strongly about – you got to protect your source,” Helwani stated. “If you’re known as the guy who’s going to buckle under that pressure, you’re done. That’s gonna get out there.”
