Mixed martial arts legend Holly Holm recently shared a memorable story from her school days about standing up against inappropriate behavior. During a candid conversation, the former UFC champion recalled an incident where she defended a friend from unwanted advances.
According to Holm, a male student had a history of inappropriate touching and making female students uncomfortable. The situation came to a head when Holm witnessed him harassing one of her friends as students were returning from recess.
“I saw something… she turned around, and she like told him off. And he was kind of like going off on her,” Holm recounted on HJR podcast. In response, she took immediate action to protect her friend, delivering a decisive kick that brought the perpetrator to the ground.
The incident led to a meeting with the principal and Holm’s mother. In an unexpected turn, the principal showed understanding toward Holm’s actions. “Holly pretty much did what teachers wish they could do. They see it. They can’t do anything,” the principal reportedly told Holm’s mother.
While school policy required a three-day suspension, the administration ensured Holm wouldn’t fall behind academically. “All of her teachers are going to let her turn in her homework. She’s not going to get like zeros and stuff like that,” the principal had explained.
The story highlights Holm’s long-standing commitment to standing up against misconduct, well before her professional career in combat sports. Today, she continues to be an inspiration for many, both inside and outside the octagon.
