In a landmark move, former President Donald Trump has officially signed an executive order titled “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports,” effectively banning biological males from competing in women’s athletic competitions. This is the fourth executive order concerning transgender issues since Trump took office, marking another significant policy shift in the ongoing debate over gender identity and sports fairness.
“The War on Women’s Sports Is Over”
Speaking about the executive order, Trump declared, “With this executive order, the war on women’s sports is over.” The statement comes as part of his broader commitment to reinforcing traditional gender distinctions in athletics, a stance that has been a cornerstone of his political platform.
Trump has long voiced concerns about the inclusion of transgender women in female sports, frequently citing fairness and the biological differences between men and women. During the 2024 Republican National Convention, he made a bold promise to his supporters: “We will not have men playing in women’s sports, that will end immediately.” The crowd erupted in applause, underscoring the divisive nature of the issue.
A Growing National Debate
The debate over transgender athletes has been a contentious issue in American politics for years. The Biden administration has modified Title IX to provide protections for LGBTQ+ students, but it has not implemented any policies preventing states or schools from banning transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports.
Currently, at least 24 states have already enacted laws prohibiting biological males from participating in women’s or girls’ sports competitions. One of the most recent cases took place in Nassau County, New York, where County Executive Bruce Blakeman signed a law banning transgender women from competing in women’s sporting events at county-run facilities. The law faced immediate legal challenges from New York Attorney General Letitia James, who argued that it violated anti-discrimination protections.
Support from Athletes and Conservatives
Former NCAA Division 1 swimmer Riley Gaines, a vocal critic of transgender inclusion in women’s sports, spoke at the RNC and condemned Democrats for their stance on the issue. “The Democratic Party is the farthest thing from being the party of or for women. They can’t even define what a woman is. So how in the world can you claim to defend what you can’t define?” Gaines remarked.
She further emphasized the broader implications, stating, “Why I’m here is to merely share the simple message that men and women are different, but it’s really broader than just the sports angle.”
Trump’s Long-Standing Position
Trump has consistently vowed to uphold policies ensuring that transgender athletes do not compete in women’s sports. According to the Associated Press, he has also pledged that if reelected, he will push Congress to pass legislation establishing that there are “only two genders” as determined at birth.
During a conversation with WWE legend Mark Calaway, also known as The Undertaker, Trump once again reiterated his stance. When asked about the integrity of women’s sports, Trump responded unequivocally: “I will get rid of it fast. Men playing in women’s sports is insane.”
