Fuse Media is making a bold entrance into the world of film with the announcement of the theatrical release of Unfightable, a ViX original documentary. Directed by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Marc J. Perez, known for works like Severe Clear and Anytown USA, this documentary tells the compelling story of Alana McLaughlin, a U.S. Army Special Forces veteran and transgender athlete striving to regain control of her life by competing in professional mixed martial arts.
The trailer for Unfightable was released amidst significant anticipation, setting the stage for the documentary’s debut in New York at the Village East Theater on September 13, followed by a run in Los Angeles at Laemmle Noho 7. After its theatrical release, the documentary will premiere exclusively on ViX for Spanish-language audiences and on Fuse for English-speaking viewers.
Alana McLaughlin has become a polarizing figure in the world of MMA. In 2021, she made headlines when she won her debut match against Céline Provost, a seasoned fighter. McLaughlin’s victory, however, was met with widespread criticism and debate, not just because of her win but due to her status as a transgender woman in a sport where gender and physicality are crucial elements.
McLaughlin’s journey is one of profound personal and public struggle. After leaving the military, where she served as a member of the U.S. Army Special Forces, she began training in MMA only a year before her debut fight. Despite her quick ascent in the sport, McLaughlin’s career has been marked by controversy, with debates raging over her participation in women’s MMA. Furthermore, the revelation that Combate Global sponsored her entire training camp—an unprecedented move in the sport—fueled further criticism.
The documentary Unfightable does more than just document McLaughlin’s MMA career; it dives deep into the challenges she faces, both in the ring and in society. Miguel Roggero, Chairman and CEO of Fuse Media, emphasized the importance of McLaughlin’s story, stating, “Alana McLaughlin’s story reflects Fuse Media’s true mission: celebrating diversity and inclusion and vocally supporting and confirming any individual’s understanding of their true identity.”
