The much-anticipated Olympic debut of breakdancing in Paris sparked widespread debate, with Australia’s Rachael “Raygun” Gunn at the center of the controversy. Gunn, a 36-year-old university lecturer with a PhD in breakdancing, found herself under a harsh spotlight after a performance that left audiences baffled and social media abuzz with ridicule. Described as a chaotic mix of kangaroo hops and T-Rex imitations, Gunn’s routine failed to earn her any points in the round-robin battles, leading to an onslaught of online jokes and criticism.
Despite the backlash, UFC superstar Israel Adesanya has refused to join in the mockery. Known for his own love of dance, Adesanya is a long-time enthusiast of breakdancing, often incorporating it into his pre-fight rituals. His decision to refrain from mocking Raygun stems from a deep respect for the art form and an understanding of the challenges that come with performing on such a grand stage.
In a recent interview, Adesanya explained his stance, saying, “Raygun, it is what it is. Use it as fuel and go and get better—not even at the Olympics—just showcase yourself over and over again and just enjoy the art of breaking.” His words reflect a supportive attitude, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and passion over public opinion.
Adesanya, who has faced his own share of criticism for his performances, empathized with Gunn, recalling his early days when street dancers were often ridiculed. “We got made fun of for busking back in the day when we were kids, so it’s not right for me to make fun of her on the world stage,” he said, highlighting the parallels between their experiences.
‘Interesting deflection… Instead of owning for their mistake and shortfall in the selection methodology, she decided to go down the line of sexism. From what I read, couldn’t see anyone engaging in that. Very weak response from Australia’s Chef de mission,’ posted another.
‘No sexism here. She just sucked. If a guy did that same dance, world would say the same thing,’ replied another.
MCGregor’s Coach Kavanagh tweeted: “Really are living in the strangest times, the death of meritocracy. First off a PhD of breakdancing?? PhD?? What a joke. Then she puts on a performance you’d expect in a Will Ferrell movie and we’ve to pretend it’s amazing. Absolute 🤡 🌎 we’re living in”

Meanwhile UFC fans pointed out that Australia should’ve just sent in Volkanovski. The former P2P UFC champ famously broke out some cool moves during a guest appearance on a TV show.
