Georges St-Pierre: There Should Be Separate Divisions for Transgender Athletes to Ensure Fairness

Mixed martial arts legend Georges St-Pierre has weighed in on the controversial topic of transgender athletes competing in combat sports. In a recent interview, the former UFC champion expressed his belief that there should be separate divisions created specifically for transgender or transitioning athletes to ensure fairness in competition.

St-Pierre emphasized that he supports equal rights for all, but feels that allowing transgender women who were born biologically male to compete against cisgender women in combat sports poses safety concerns and competitive advantages that cannot be ignored.

“I think it’s disgusting when someone born as a man changes their sex and then competes as a woman,” St-Pierre stated bluntly. “I’m not afraid to stand up and say that because I love women and I think they need to be protected, especially in combat sports.”

The Canadian argued that the physiological differences between those born male versus female, including factors like bone density and muscular development, create an uneven playing field that goes beyond just hormone levels. He believes these inherent physical advantages could put cisgender female fighters at increased risk of injury.

Rather than excluding transgender athletes entirely, St-Pierre proposed creating new divisions where they can compete against others in similar situations. “They should have their own category – that would be fair,” he suggested.

St-Pierre acknowledged this is a complex and sensitive issue, but felt compelled to speak out in support of athlete safety and competitive integrity in combat sports. He hopes a thoughtful solution can be reached that allows for inclusion while also maintaining fairness.
