In a resurfaced clip, Ronda Rousey boldly claimed she could take down Floyd Mayweather in an MMA match. This comment has sparked intense debate among fans and pundits alike, with many questioning whether Rousey’s skills would translate to a victory over the undefeated boxer.
However, it was not Rousey who first made this claim. In an interview, Jon Jones, the current UFC Heavyweight Champion, expressed his opinion on the hypothetical matchup. Jones, known for his dominant reign in the Octagon, confidently stated that Rousey’s unique skillset would give her the upper hand against Mayweather.
Prior to transitioning to MMA, Rousey won a bronze medal at the Judo Olympic games.
When asked about the possible outcome, Jones explained, “I’m going to have to give this one to Ronda.” He cited their similar weight and Rousey’s impressive strength, honed through her Olympic judo experience. Jones also highlighted Rousey’s exceptional jiu-jitsu skills, stating, “Her jiu-jitsu is on the highest level. And if you’re on the ground against someone who knows jiu-jitsu and you’ve never trained it, it’s like drowning.”
Rousey’s background in judo and Brazilian jiu-jitsu would undoubtedly provide her with a significant advantage in an MMA match. As Jones noted, Mayweather, with no formal training in jiu-jitsu, would likely struggle to counter Rousey’s grappling expertise.
While Mayweather’s boxing prowess is undeniable, with a staggering 50-0 professional record, MMA is a different beast altogether. The added elements of wrestling, submissions, and ground fighting would level the playing field, allowing Rousey to capitalize on her strengths.
Suffice to say this is one of all time most controversial clips due to the fact that Ronda Rousey is a female, and one whose MMA skills have been outgrown by the current talent pool.
