In a controversial move, the Oregon School Activities Association (OSAA) has allegedly implemented a ban prohibiting girls from expressing dissent towards transgender athletes participating in sports events.
The news of this ban surfaced following the recent victory of transgender athlete Aayden Gallagher, a transgender athlete.
Gallagher ended up winning in the 200-meter dash during the Oregon School Activities Association Track & Field State Championships, raising eyebrows and sparking debates.
Witnesses described the moment when Gallagher overtook a female runner in the race, resulting in a shift from cheers to boos from the audience. A former Kentucky swimmer and advocate for women’s sports, Riley Gaines captioned the incident. She talked about the controversy surrounding transgender athletes competing in gender-specific events.
A mother whose daughter participated in the event expressed her discontent with the situation. She voiced her concerns, stating that OSAA is poised to penalize girls who publicly voice their opposition to transgender participation in sports.
The mother stated: “My daughter is in her senior year, and she has to compete with Aayden, who just won first at State and took away spots from our girls. He doesn’t deserve it. He needs to be with the men. I don’t care if he’s transgender. You can have your own opinion and do what you want to do, but you have no right taking away from these girls.”
The reporter asked: “Has anybody been afraid to speak out?”
The mother then responded: “Yes, a lot of parents are afraid to speak out because there is [an announcement] from OSAA that if you discriminate or you put anyone down for their gender or if you talk negative, it can disqualify the children from events, but it can also pick out parents from all OSAA events.”
She concluded by saying: “Why is that transgender and LGBTQ have taken away so many rights for women we have fought so hard for years, and here they are taking it from us sports. They’re taking it from the girls who don’t deserve it.”
