Jake Paul has gone a long way in just three years. He’s gone from being an American YouTube personality to full fledged boxer. Paul suffered his first defeat in the professional boxing ring at the hands of British youngster Tommy ‘TNT’ Fury.
Fury won the eight-round boxing bout by split decision with one judging scoring the event for Paul 75-74 and the other two for Fury, both by a score of 76-73.
It was a gritty contest, and the referee docked points from both boxers. Paul struck Fury to the back of the head in the fifth round and the referee deducted points from him. On the other hand, Fury was then docked points for holding in the next round.
Having said that, former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder thinks Paul should have won the bout. He said that his point penalty was excessive.
“I think Jake got that one. I think the referee, that was an immature point deduction. I think they only gave it to Fury because of the point taken. The referee’s supposed to give three warnings, he gave no warnings. Get out of here.”
Even without the point punishment, Paul would still have lost the bout since Fury was given a 76-73 victory by two of the three judges.
Based on the striking statistics, it also looks like Fury earned his win since he out-landed Paul in each of the rounds.
On another occasion that evening, Wilder was reunited with his rival Tyson Fury. Wilder had previously boxed in three bouts against him, drawing once and losing twice by knockout.
As Wilder was moving into the arena, Fury suddenly appeared and said “Bomb squad.” This has become Wilder’s catchphrase. After turning to face Fury, the two men embraced each other.
After the exchange, Fury said: “I felt absolutely amazing, I almost got a stiffy there. Unbelievable.”
