Former UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping has said that he is worried about having to go through surgery after fracturing his back twice.
The 43-year-old stated in a video uploaded from his hospital bed on Twitter that he would have a second back surgery since the first one he had didn’t successfully treat his problems. Although Bisping didn’t specify how he hurt his back, it is likely related to his extensive MMA career.
“Alright, I’m back in the goddamn hospital again, this time because of my back, which is broken in two places, very painful as you can imagine,” he said in a video posted to Twitter.
He added,
“So, they’re doing a procedure, where they’re gonna fry the nerve, it’s called an ablation. I’ve had it once before, didn’t do anything, so fingers crossed this time it works, otherwise, it’s a lifetime of pain and misery. So, fingers crossed, take care.”
Bisping has had a number of significant operations, including one on his neck in January 2021. This happened 15 months after a knee replacement operation.
Before having his neck operated on, he posted pictures on social media. He wrote:
“Last one, hopefully. This is a decent one. Anterior Cervical discectomy. They enter through an incision in the front of my neck. Push all my throat and insides to one side to reveal my spine.”
“Then they remove a disc, insert a titanium plate, screw in 4 screws and shave down some bone Spurs in the spine and stitch me back up. See you in about 6 hours.”
After a 13-year MMA career, Bisping retired in 2018 with a 30-9 record.
In his last, he lost to Kelvin Gastelum in November 2017. He was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame two years later.
He regularly commentates UFC events and is likely to keep working for the promotion. Bisping wasn’t loved during the early days of his career but fans warmed up to him after learning of his eye issues and the extent to which he went into some of the biggest events in his career handicapped.
