Jimmy Kimmel wasted little time taking aim at Donald Trump following the president’s midterm election setback, opening his election coverage with a series of jokes about the Republican’s political fortunes.
The late-night host kicked things off with a particularly sharp jab, declaring that “after all the talk about Nicki Minaj’s [ ], John Husted’s [ ], the only [ ] on Trump’s mind tonight is the one that just got handed to him.”
Kimmel then imagined Trump watching the election results unfold from the White House. He said, “Trump spent the day at the White House watching coverage, watching Fox News, trying to give himself an insurrection. Word from the from inside the White House is he’s already run out of dipping sauce containers to throw at the television set.”
The host went on to highlight several major Democratic victories, including John Ossoff’s Senate win in Georgia. He also celebrated Keisha Lance Bottoms becoming “the first black female governor in American history” and James Terico potentially becoming “the first Democrat elected to Senate in Texas since 1988.”
Despite Trump’s extensive campaigning, Kimmel suggested the president’s efforts had ultimately amounted to little.
“Trump definitely gave it all. He was on the road constantly over the last month,” he said. “Would I dislike to be the Door Dash driver who delivers Trump his Papa John’s tonight?”
Kimmel subsequently turned his attention to what he described as Trump’s disconnect from the issues facing ordinary Americans, arguing that the president’s priorities had little to do with the concerns driving voters to the polls.
“Trump’s priorities are insane. They have no relation to what Americans are worried about. Americans are worried about corruption, inflation, climate change, war, wealth disparity, health care, housing, measles, and democracy itself,” he said.
The host then contrasted those concerns with what he believed were the priorities of Trump’s MAGA movement.
“Now, let’s take a look at the 10 subjects MAGA seems to be worried about. Transgender, testosterone, black Helen of Troy, windmills, ballrooms, Mexicans, reflecting pools, racism against whites, Tylenol, Canada, and Canada. And Canada. So, in case the president is wondering why things didn’t go his way tonight, refer election monitoring concerns to the list on this side.”
Kimmel also took aim at Trump’s approval ratings, suggesting voters were far from satisfied with his performance.
“Trump’s approval rating here is terrible. Just like every woman he’s ever slept with, voters are unsatisfied with the job he is doing,” he quipped.
Concluding his election-night commentary, Kimmel credited Trump for the Democrats’ victory while taking another dig at the president’s promises.
“Democrats have officially taken the house thanks to President Trump. The bad news is I guess we’re not getting that $5,000.”
