Former Russian heavyweight contender Denis Boytsov has passed at the age of 40 in his hometown of Oryol, Russia. Sources state that his father Nikolai Boytsov confirmed to Russian news agency that his son’s passing resulted from a detached blood clot.
According to his father, Boytsov was at home with his wife when he became seriously ill. Emergency medical personnel responded but were unable to save him.
Born in Oryol in 1986, Boytsov was once regarded as one of the most promising figures in heavyweight boxing. He captured the WBC youth heavyweight title in 2006 and later secured WBA and WBO regional titles. His professional record stood at 36 wins and just one loss, with 27 of those victories coming by knockout.
British heavyweight David Price once recalled a sparring session with Boytsov in Germany that left a lasting impression.
“I sparred a Russian called Denis Boytsov in Germany once,” Price told Daily Star Sport. “He only hit the top of my head, but he was a powerful puncher.”
Despite his skills, Boytsov’s world title opportunity never came. In May 2015, Boytsov was found unconscious between two Berlin train stations with severe head injuries. He sustained a fractured skull and brain swelling, which placed him in a medically induced coma for seven weeks.
Initially treated in Berlin, he was later transferred to a rehabilitation clinic in Hamburg. Price later reflected on the incident, stating that Boytsov “got absolutely battered by a gang of Russian fellas and left. He couldn’t compete again.”
The injuries were catastrophic. Boytsov lost over 66 pounds (30 kilograms) while hospitalized and lost the ability to speak and walk. In August 2021, he was moved back to Russia for continued care, where he remained under 24-hour supervision, unable to speak and requiring assistance with daily activities.
Boytsov’s career trajectory had been on an upward path before the Berlin incident. With his unbeaten record largely intact and momentum building, he was being positioned for a world title challenge. Instead, his name faded from the conversation as the years passed and the heavyweight division moved forward without him.
