In a recent post-bout analysis discussion, MMA coach Faris Zahabi revealed an interesting rumor about featherweight champion Ilia Topuria that may explain his surprising loss to Justin Gaethje.
According to Zahabi, who was discussing Islam Makhachev’s historic victory over Ian Garry, Topuria allegedly had a tattoo done on his ribs commemorating the world champions he has defeated, and reportedly included Justin Gaethje’s name before their match even took place. The coach suggested this premature celebration may have contributed to Topuria’s downfall.
“I love Ilia Topuria, but I heard a rumor that he got a tattoo on his ribs about all the world champions he beat, former world champions, and he put Justin Gaethje’s name,” Zahabi said during his analysis. “And of course, we all know he has a victory party the night before. Man, don’t count your eggs before they hatch.”
The coach emphasized that while such confidence can look impressive when things go according to plan, the outcome can be embarrassing when the result goes the other way.
Zahabi noted that Topuria’s overconfidence extended beyond just the tattoo, as the champion reportedly held a victory party the night before the fight.
“It’s really cool when you win. It’s really cool. You look like a genius,” Zahabi explained. “But when it goes wrong, you look really bad. And now guys, people are just going to be like smirking at you.”
The veteran coach compared this situation to Islam Makhachev’s calculated approach against Ian Garry, praising the lightweight champion for showing respect to his opponent and competed with appropriate caution. Zahabi suggested that Topuria should have adopted a similar mindset rather than assuming victory before stepping into the octagon.
“If he was more measured, a little bit more fearful of Gaethje, a little bit more wary, he could have competed more brilliantly,” Zahabi said. “We saw a brilliant performance from Makhachev. Makhachev was very calculated.”
