Secretary of State Marco Rubio has made it clear he won’t be adopting Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s controversial diet regimen anytime soon, despite working closely with the health secretary in the Trump administration.
During an appearance on the Katie Miller podcast alongside his wife Jeanette, Rubio was asked about Kennedy’s diet of red meat and fermented foods, particularly sauerkraut. The Secretary’s response was immediate and emphatic.
“This is a diet that consists of eating sauerkraut and meat,” Rubio explained. “Now, you understand like this is not a sustainable thing. Like you can’t just walk into it, you know.”
When his wife interjected that Kennedy sustains the diet by traveling with coolers of sauerkraut, Rubio doubled down on his position. “Can you imagine? He has to travel with coolers of sauerkraut. I’m not gonna travel the world with a cooler full of sauerkraut. It’s ridiculous. I can’t do it. It’s not sustainable.”
Despite his rejection of Kennedy’s eating plan, Rubio clarified his support for the broader Make America Healthy Again movement.
“I’m in favor of MAHA. Like I think people should be healthy,” he said, though his wife quickly countered that he doesn’t personally follow healthy eating habits.
The Florida Republican admitted to his preference for convenience foods, defending the Pop-Tart as “one of the great American innovations in the history of the world.” He described his past attempt at the ketogenic diet as “a near psychotic event,” joking that the sugar withdrawal during the first 72 hours left him dangerously irritable.
“Like if I did this in this job I would be Mr. President we must b*mb you know Paraguay and it’s like why? I don’t know. I’m just really mad I haven’t had any sugar.”
Rubio’s wife confirmed his sweet tooth and love of fast food, noting he’ll consume anything with sugar. The Secretary did acknowledge that while he’s “not against this diet” and encourages others to try it, he’s pragmatic about his own limitations. “I’m just saying it’s not for everyone.”
Despite their dietary differences, Rubio praised Kennedy effusively during the interview, calling him “one of the best people I’ve ever met” and “pure of heart.”
