Sumo Wrestler Stops Knife Wielding Man At Fan Event

When Kofi “Koustics” Miller showed up to OS NYC on June 18, he was hoping to climb the ranked ladder in his favorite game. What he got instead was a moment that would make headlines far beyond the gaming community.

Miller, a well-known figure in the combat game scene who also competes in sumo wrestling, was broadcasting live on Twitch at the New York City gaming lounge when an Apex Legends player reportedly lost his composure during a match.

The situation turned serious when the individual pulled out a knife during a confrontation with a staff member at the bar area.

Rather than standing back, Miller stepped in. Footage from his broadcast captured him leaving his seat to intervene, and he returned with blood on his clothing. He later described the chain of events to his audience and to IGN.

“We get him to walk outside. But he’s tweaking. He’s screaming. He tries to come back in with the knife, so I bodyslam him and hold him until the police come,” Miller said, noting that the individual landed on his own knife during the encounter.

Despite the gravity of the situation, Miller managed to keep his signature sense of humor. “I’m mad because this was my rank-up game, too,” he said. “This dude cost me 14 LP.”

Miller also reflected on what prompted the Apex player’s outburst and offered some straightforward advice: anyone that upset over a game should step away and try something less stressful.

His sumo background proved to be the right tool for the moment. Rather than escalating the confrontation, Miller used his training to physically restrain the individual and hold him until law enforcement arrived, keeping everyone else at the event out of harm’s way.

Whether the individual faces any legal consequences remains unclear, as it has not been confirmed whether an arrest was made or charges filed.
