Mayweather Facing Criminal Charges For Using A Bad Check To Buy $200,000 Watch

Floyd Mayweather, the former undefeated boxing champion who built a career as much on his “Money” persona as on his performances in the ring, is now at the center of a legal dispute. The 49-year-old faces two felony charges tied to an alleged $200,000 payment for a luxury timepiece that prosecutors say was never properly covered.

According to sources, court records indicate that in December 2024, Mayweather visited a Las Vegas resale shop and selected an Audemars Piguet watch, presenting a check for the full purchase price.

Prosecutors allege the check, drawn from a Wells Fargo account, lacked the available funds, property, or credit necessary to honor the transaction. The charges filed against him include theft and intent to defraud. His legal team has yet to issue any public statement in response to the allegations.

What makes the case particularly notable is the patience the seller reportedly extended before escalating the matter. Marc Cook, an attorney for the watch business, indicated that the company held off on taking legal action because it wanted to give the former champion a fair opportunity to resolve the outstanding balance.

That goodwill, however, did not produce results. Cook noted that repeated collection efforts went unanswered and the store never received payment for the timepiece.

If the charges hold and a conviction follows, Mayweather could face real consequences. The intent to defraud count carries a potential sentence of up to four years in prison, while the theft count could carry an even harsher penalty depending on how the case unfolds.

For decades, Mayweather crafted an image synonymous with wealth. Throughout his undefeated career across five weight divisions, he generated billions in revenue and became one of the most recognizable names in sports. Fleets of luxury vehicles, stacks of cash, rare jewelry, and high-end watches were as much a part of his public identity as his technical mastery in the ring.

Yet recent years have told a more complicated story. Reports have surfaced of unpaid civil judgments, tax complications, and a string of ongoing legal battles.

The latest legal development arrives as Mayweather continues to remain active in the public eye. He is scheduled for an exhibition appearance against kickboxer Mike Zambidis.
