Kyrgyz MMA Star Drowns Trying To Save Children

A young athlete known for his courage inside the cage has now been remembered for an act of bravery far greater than any bout he ever competed in. Zheenaliev is a 30-year-old mixed martial arts competitor from Kyrgyzstan who lost his life in Lake Issyk-Kul after plunging into its waters to pull a group of teenagers to safety.

According to sources, Zheenaliev was relaxing with friends along the shores of the iconic Central Asian lake when he spotted several young girls being dragged by strong underwater currents. Without hesitation, he and a companion entered the water and worked to bring each of them back to shore. All four teenagers survived. Zheenaliev did not.

Shortly after the rescue, witnesses watched as the young athlete slipped beneath the surface and failed to come back up. Emergency divers were dispatched to search the lake, one of the deepest bodies of fresh water anywhere on the planet, and eventually recovered his body.

Authorities confirmed the incident as a drowning that took place in the course of a rescue attempt.

Lake Issyk-Kul, nestled high in the Tian Shan mountains of Kyrgyzstan, is a destination beloved by locals and tourists alike, but its depths and currents have claimed many lives over the years.

In his professional MMA career, which spanned from 2017 to 2019, Zheenaliev compiled a record of two wins and two losses. He announced his presence in the sport with a pair of impressive finishes, earning one victory by submission and another by knockout. His career was cut short by consecutive setbacks, including a stoppage loss in his final appearance. A scheduled bout later in 2019 was called off for reasons that were never publicly disclosed.
