Brendan Schaub recently appeared on a JRE podcast episode alongside Joe Rogan, Eddie Bravo, and Joey Diaz, and it did not go particularly well for him. During the conversation, Schaub made his most transparent attempts at self-promotion, and Rogan made sure it did not land the way Schaub had hoped.
Throughout the episode, Schaub spent a considerable amount of time praising Rogan and steering conversations toward himself. But the moment that stood out most came when Schaub tried to plug his new car show on Tubi called Gearheads Gone Wild.
The plug arrived awkwardly, wedged into a conversation about high-powered vehicles, and the reaction from the group was immediate.
“I was filming a TV show, Gearheads Gone Wild,” Schaub said during the episode. “I don’t want to go out filming a…”
Bravo replied: “Gearheads Gone Wild? That’s hilarious. Is that your show?”
Schaub confirmed it was, adding, “That’s my show.”
Rather than offering any real support or enthusiasm for the project, Rogan and his friends laughed and called it hilarious. Rogan then quickly redirected the conversation back to the matches. He said, “These guys are banging.”
This reaction is consistent with how Rogan has historically responded to Schaub’s business ventures. When Schaub was heavily promoting his whiskey brand Tiger Thick, Rogan was blunt about it on multiple occasions.
“It’s very good whiskey with the worst name ever,” Rogan said on one episode.
He even brought it up when Schaub was not present, saying, “I ha te the name of it. I love Brendan, but I ha te the name of his whiskey. It’s Tiger Thick. Like, shut the… but the whiskey itself is outstanding.”
Schaub has been publicly open about his financial situation, admitting on his own podcast that he can no longer afford the mortgage on his house. He has also been listing cars and property for sale.
During the episode, Schaub also framed his financial troubles around the idea that no one in the UFC taught him how to manage money after retiring, conveniently leaving out the fact that he retired over a decade ago and earned significantly more from podcasting and comedy than he ever did from fighting.
Adding to the awkwardness of the episode, Schaub reportedly lit his cigar backwards and was inhaling from the burnt wrapper for the duration of the podcast. Nobody told him.
As for Gearheads Gone Wild, at the time of the episode, the show had no trailers, no promotional material on Tubi, and an Instagram account with 50 followers and no posts.
