46-Year-Old UFC Veteran Disappears After Diving into the Amazon

A celebrated heavyweight MMA star and UFC veteran has been reported missing after entering the Rio Negro in Brazil’s Amazon region which has triggered a large scale search operation in one of the area’s most dangerous waterways.

Gerônimo “Mondragon” dos Santos, 46, disappeared on Saturday after going into the water near São Gabriel da Cachoeira in Amazonas state. The MMA star from Feira de Santana in Bahia was serving as the municipality’s deputy secretary of Public Security at the time of the incident.

Mondragon built his reputation on the Brazilian MMA circuit as a heavyweight world champion before signing with the UFC in 2012. His promotional debut never took place after medical testing revealed hepatitis B which prevented him from competing. He was later released from his contract and returned to domestic competition.

The veteran continued to compete well into his forties. His most recent appearance came in April when he took part in a bare knuckle boxing match against former UFC heavyweight Aleksei Oleinik and secured a first round stoppage.

Outside competition Mondragon also became known for appearances on televised prank programs and social media content which helped him build a following beyond the cage.

Search efforts continued until 2 a.m. following his disappearance and resumed the next morning according to his brother Feliciano Borges Neto. In a video posted Sunday he asked for continued support while the family follows developments closely.

“We’re going to try to find our brother. Any updates, I’ll keep you informed,”

Local authorities issued warnings about the specific stretch of the Rio Negro where Mondragon went missing. The municipality released a public safety alert describing conditions that make the area particularly dangerous for swimmers.

According to the advisory the riverbed contains soft sand that suddenly drops off with depths reaching up to 49 feet (15 meters) in certain areas. The circular current pattern creates conditions that challenge even strong swimmers.

“You who are new to São Gabriel da Cachoeira, pay attention… This is not a place to play with your children. The current makes a circular rotation, making swimming difficult,”

The region’s hydrological features continue to complicate rescue efforts. Unpredictable depths shifting terrain and rotational water flow have all contributed to the difficulty of the operation.

São Gabriel da Cachoeira is located in Brazil’s far northwest near the borders of Colombia and Venezuela where the Rio Negro functions as a major tributary of the Amazon River system. The remote setting and vast waterways present additional logistical challenges for emergency teams.

As of Sunday search crews had not located the MMA star. Family members remain on site working alongside local authorities as the operation continues.
