Mutliple time Gold medalist Sadulaev Out of Wrestling World Championships

Russian wrestling superstar Abdulrashid Sadulaev, widely regarded as one of the world’s elite wrestlers, will be absent from the 2025 UWW Senior World Championships in Zagreb due to ongoing visa complications stemming from a bureaucratic mistake made over a year ago.

The saga began in January 2024 when Sadulaev attempted to enter Romania for the European Championships using a tourist visa obtained through Spain. Romanian border officials denied him entry, explaining that he needed either a national or sports visa for his intended competition purposes. This seemingly minor administrative error resulted in a devastating consequence: a 59-month ban from the entire Schengen zone, extending until mid-2029.

Recognizing the severity of the situation, Sadulaev obtained a new passport in early 2025, hoping to circumvent the restrictions. However, when he applied for a Slovak visa alongside the Russian team in March 2025, his application was the only one rejected. The Slovak consulate delivered crushing news: the ban was linked to his personal data, not his previous passport, making the document change irrelevant.

The punishment appears disproportionate to the offense. A nearly five-year ban for a single visa classification error raises questions about whether political considerations are influencing what should be straightforward administrative processes. Wrestling analyst Chael Sonnen noted the disappointing nature of bureaucratic interference in sport, emphasizing how refreshing it is

“when sport trumps all” and world leaders can “stand side by side and recognize the results of a sporting competition.”

Multiple parties share responsibility for this unfortunate situation. While Sadulaev made the initial error by applying for the wrong visa type, the Russian Wrestling Federation and relevant officials failed to provide adequate support for their premier athlete during the visa application process. The combination of personal mistake, potential political motivations, and systemic failures has created a perfect storm keeping one of wrestling’s biggest stars off the mat.

Sadulaev‘s absence represents a significant loss for the sport. Known as “The Russian Tank,” he has dominated international competition, losing only one match in the past four years. His rivalry with Bahrain’s representative, who handed him that rare defeat, was expected to be one of the championship’s marquee storylines.

Until the ban is lifted or expires in 2029, Sadulaev remains effectively exiled from European competition, highlighting how bureaucratic missteps can derail even the most accomplished athletic careers.
