Matt Serra: My daughter strangled the kid after he made short jokes

Recently, UFC legend Matt Serra shared an unforgettable story about how his daughter handled a disrespectful 12-year-old during a jiu-jitsu interview at his academy. He talked about it during his appearance on the JRE MMA Show.

Serra was hosting what seemed like a routine interview with a young fan and his family at his academy following a Saturday class with about 60 students. The 12-year-old’s mother had arranged the interview, positioning it as something to “inspire the youth of today.”

Despite feeling tired from his ulcerative colitis affecting his sleep, Serra graciously agreed to sit down with the kid after an exhausting training session.

What happened next caught the former welterweight champion completely off guard. As Serra recounted: “He goes, ‘Okay, I’m here with freaking UFC legend Matt Serra, and I’m 12 years old, and yet we managed to be the same exact height.'” The insult was clearly premeditated, with the parents laughing behind the camera, seemingly encouraging their son’s disrespectful behavior.

Serra’s immediate reaction was visceral: “I’m seeing red. I want to f**k you.” His first instinct was to confront the father, whom he suspected had taught the child these poor manners. However, remembering that his three daughters were present in the academy, Serra took a different approach.

Rather than lose his temper or handle the situation inappropriately, Serra demonstrated the kind of creative problem-solving that made him a champion. He called over his daughter Maria and said, “Give me one second, kid. Maria, this kid’s giving me a hard time. I want you to roll with him and put it on him.”

What followed was exactly what Serra had hoped for. His daughter proceeded to dominate the disrespectful young visitor on the mats, giving him a taste of real jiu-jitsu consequences. Serra offered the kid a choice: “You want to start from the feet or throw on the knees?” The boy chose knees, and Maria systematically outclassed him.

The video of the encounter, which Serra posted on his Instagram, garnered over 38,000 views. As his daughter controlled the young challenger, Serra made sure the lesson was clear: “Are you going to make any more short jokes?” The answer, predictably, was a deflated “No.”

Serra’s daughter demonstrated superior technique and composure while delivering a valuable life lesson to someone who clearly needed it.

Serra’s handling of the situation reflects his broader philosophy about modern society’s lack of accountability. As he explained during the podcast: “Nowadays, everybody’s so used to no repercussions. Everybody just gets so much ruder. I always say bring bullies back. The world was a better place.”

Serra’s story has become legendary among MMA fans not just for its entertainment value, but for its underlying message about respect, consequences, and the importance of proper parenting. Sometimes, the best way to handle a disrespectful situation is to let the mats do the talking – and in this case, they spoke very clearly indeed.
