During a recent episode of The Big Podcast with Shaq, basketball legend Shaquille O’Neal revealed a fascinating story about his first encounter with boxing icon Mike Tyson. It took place while Tyson was serving time in prison.
The meeting was arranged by Fresh West, who now works as an executive for the New York Knicks. “We were playing Indiana,” Shaq recalled, when West approached him and D Scott with an unexpected proposition. “He said, ‘Hey man, you want to go see Mike?’ So Mike, he said, ‘Mike Tyson.'”
What struck Shaq most about the visit was Tyson’s immediate recognition. “I was amazed that Mike knew who I was,” Shaq shared. During their prison conversation, Tyson offered valuable advice and extended an invitation that would cement their friendship. “Mike gave me a lot of gyms, a lot of tools, and he said, ‘Hey man, when I came home, I want you to come to my first fight.'”
True to his word, Tyson called Shaq upon his release and provided tickets to his comeback match. But their friendship truly deepened when Tyson invited Shaq to his home, leading to one of the most memorable encounters in sports history, the infamous tiger incident that has become legendary among fans.
For Tyson, having Shaq visit during his incarceration held special significance. “I had no idea he was coming. Then I saw him. I said, ‘Wow, this is pretty cool,'” Tyson reflected during their podcast conversation. He explained that Shaq was a hot topic of conversation in prison at the time, as he had just emerged from college and was dominating the NBA. “They were talking about him every day. When he came, I said, ‘That’s pretty cool.'”
The prison visit created quite a stir among the other inmates. As Tyson recalled, “When I was coming from my cell, everybody in the vision room came by” to catch a glimpse of the rising basketball star.
Both Shaq and Tyson were known for their physical dominance and larger-than-life personalities, making their friendship a natural fit.
