UFC fans stack their bets against Paul Craig after he fails to rip his shirt

Scottish UFC star Paul Craig’s inability to tear his shirt during the weigh-in ceremony has unexpectedly influenced betting patterns ahead of his light heavyweight clash with Rodolfo Bellato.

At the official weigh-in for UFC on ESPN 69 in Atlanta, Craig successfully made the 206-pound limit for his contest. However, what followed became an unintentional viral moment when the submission specialist attempted the traditional post-weigh-in shirt tear – only for the fabric to stubbornly refuse to rip.

The awkward moment, captured on video and widely shared across social media platforms, has apparently impacted betting confidence. Following the incident, oddsmakers dramatically shifted the line to favor Bellato at -2500, suggesting an overwhelming probability of victory for the Brazilian contender.

Craig enters this contest in desperate need of a win, having lost his last three bouts and five of his previous six appearances in the octagon. The 36-year-old Scotsman, known primarily for his ground game and submission prowess, was originally scheduled to face Bellato in May before the contest was postponed due to a skin infection affecting his opponent.

Bellato, 29, brings a 12-2-1 record into the contest and has shown promise in his brief UFC tenure. After making a statement with a TKO victory over Ihor Potieria in his promotional debut, the Brazilian fought to a majority draw against Jimmy Crute in a back-and-forth contest that showcased both vulnerability and resilience.

Sports betting analysts note that while such superficial incidents shouldn’t theoretically impact odds, the visual of Craig struggling with his shirt appears to have reinforced existing concerns about his recent form. One Vegas oddsmaker, speaking on condition of anonymity, explained: “Sometimes these symbolic moments can trigger mass betting behavior. The optics weren’t good.”

Social media reactions have ranged from mockery to genuine concern about Craig’s preparedness. One Twitter user commented: “If he can’t tear cotton, how’s he gonna tear through Bellato?”

The bout serves as the featured prelim at State Farm Arena and represents a critical juncture for both competitors. While Craig aims to halt his slide and remain relevant in the division, Bellato seeks to build momentum and establish himself as a rising contender at 205 pounds.

Whether the shirt incident proves prophetic or merely an amusing footnote will be determined when the cage door closes this Sunday.
