Former UFC champion B.J. Penn found himself in custody for the third time in six days as his legal troubles continue to mount in Hawaii.
Penn, 46, was arrested Friday following a failure to appear in court, violating his previous bail agreement. This latest detention follows two separate arrests last weekend related to charges of “abuse of family or household member: offensive physical contact.” After being taken into custody, Penn was released after posting a $2,000 bond.

According to KHON2, Penn attempted to have the bench warrant recalled, claiming he missed his court appearance because he was sick with COVID-19. The judge, however, rejected this explanation, leading to his third arrest in less than a week.
Penn’s request for a restraining order against his mother, Lorraine Shin, was denied by a judge who determined the allegations “do not establish a basis for relief.” This marks the second rejection of Penn’s attempts to secure protection orders against his mother.
Meanwhile, Shin has successfully obtained a temporary restraining order against her son. The court order requires Penn to maintain a distance of at least 100 feet from his mother at all times after she detailed what she described as “extreme psychological abuse.”
In her filing, Shin alleged that Penn had engaged in concerning behavior, including putting glue in her bedroom door lock and stealing her mail. The mail incident reportedly led to a confrontation that resulted in Penn’s initial arrest last Sunday.
Shin claims that during the altercation, Penn blinded her with a bright flashlight when she attempted to retrieve her mail from a vehicle. When she tried to access the mail, Shin alleges that Penn grabbed her arms and shoved her against the car, prompting her to call out for help from another family member.
The situation has taken a troubling turn as Shin expressed concerns about her son’s mental health in court documents.
“I believe my son is suffering from Capgras delusional syndrome,” Shin stated in the restraining order request. “He believes I’m an imposter who has killed his family to gain control of the family assets.”

Penn also believes his brothers were replaced.
She requested the court order Penn to “get medical treatment or other source of therapy” as part of the six-month temporary restraining order, which was granted with the next court date set for June 10.
The Hall of Fame star, who competed in the UFC from 2001 to 2019 and captured world titles in two weight divisions, has recently made concerning social media posts claiming family members were “murdered” and replaced by “imposters,” raising significant concerns about his wellbeing.
