Recently, 58-year-old Lee Meehan claimed the bare-knuckle heavyweight championship at “Rumble in the Cage” in Canada, proving that age is just a number when it comes to combat sports excellence.
The Lethbridge, Alberta native, faced off against 38-year-old Carmen Umberville from Thompson, Manitoba, in what was billed as the evening’s main event. Umberville, weighing in at 259 pounds and representing Wild Beast MMA, came into the fight with a recent TKO victory in his last professional MMA bout.
However, it was the seasoned Meehan, weighing 248 pounds, who stole the show with a masterful performance that silenced any doubts about his ability to compete at the highest level despite his age. The match lived up to expectations as both heavyweight contenders engaged in an explosive slugfest from the opening bell.
Umberville started aggressively, swinging away in an attempt to end the bout early. But Meehan’s experience showed as he weathered the initial storm and began to find his range with devastating uppercuts and body shots. The turning point came when Meehan connected with a series of hard shots that left Umberville visibly hurt and bleeding from the nose.
The end came dramatically when Umberville received a standing eight count after absorbing more punishment. Despite being given the opportunity to continue, the younger fighter chose not to respond, handing Meehan the victory and the championship belt. The decision was understandable given the massive hematomas visible on Umberville’s head, clear evidence of the power behind Meehan’s bare-knuckle strikes.
Post-bout, the new champion remained humble and philosophical about his achievement. When asked about his motivation at 58, Meehan emphasized the importance of discipline. He stated, “discipline equals freedom, having discipline every day, sticking to what you gotta do, just showing up, and it’s not easy, but you just find a way to do it.”
