A tragic incident has surprised the boxing community after Mexican boxer Pedro Antonio ‘Tony’ Rodriguez was discovered dead in his hotel room just hours following his bout in Phoenix, Arizona.
The 37-year-old boxer competed Saturday night against 21-year-old American Phillip Vella in a super-bantamweight contest at the American Royal Palace. The event, promoted as the Brawl in the Barrio, was sanctioned by the Arizona Boxing and MMA Commission and organized by Del Sol Boxing Promotions.
After six rounds, Vella was declared the winner by unanimous decision. Both boxers departed the venue and returned to their accommodations, with plans to attend a dinner gathering with other competitors from the card.
Rodriguez never appeared at the scheduled evening event. Hotel staff became concerned Sunday morning when the Mexican boxer failed to arrive in the lobby for his planned checkout and airport transportation. When staff unlocked his room door, they found Rodriguez unresponsive.
The cause of death remains undetermined as authorities continue their investigation. Officials have not ruled out the possibility that his recent bout may have contributed to the tragic outcome.
Karla Valenzuela, Rodriguez’s wife, spoke about her final conversation with her husband. She revealed that it occurred immediately after his match concluded.
“He called me when his fight ended. Even when the show was over and he left for the hotel, he talked to me, he made a video call,” she explained.
Valenzuela described how Rodriguez told her “he was going out to buy dinner and that he was coming back because at 3:30am in the morning they were going to pick them up to take them to the airport, that was the only thing I talked to him about.”
While uncertain about the exact circumstances, Valenzuela expressed her belief that some kind of “blow” from the contest may have caused her husband’s death. “I am also confused. We have to wait until tomorrow to see what the report says,” she added.
Del Sol Boxing Promotions issued a heartfelt statement mourning the loss: “The Del Sol Boxing family is heartbroken at the death of Pedro Antonio Rodriguez. Our hearts and thoughts are with his loved ones. Out of respect for his family, please join us in waiting for the local authorities to complete their work and investigation.”

Vella also expressed his condolences through social media, writing: “Truly heartbroken to find out this news. Thankful to have shared the ring with Pedro for six rounds. My thoughts and prayers are with his family. Rest easy, champion.”
The boxing world awaits the results of the official investigation as Rodriguez’s family and friends mourn the sudden loss of the veteran boxer.
