30-Year-Old British Muay Thai Hopeful Dies from Infection Just Days Before his wife gave birth

A devastating tragedy has struck a young British family, leaving a widow to welcome their newborn daughter into the world just days after her husband’s sudden death in Thailand.

Ryan O’Connor, 30, from Rossendale, passed away on June 28 after falling critically ill while pursuing his lifelong dream of training at a Thai boxing academy. His wife Joanne, a local mathematics teacher, gave birth to their daughter Maya Jasmine O’Connor yesterday morning, surrounded by family but heartbroken by her husband’s absence.

The couple’s nearly three-year-old daughter Riley will also grow up without her father, creating an unimaginable burden for the grieving mother now raising two children alone.

Ryan had traveled to Thailand on May 29, seizing what his brother Liam described as his “last chance” to fulfill a dream that had long captivated him. “He just wanted to do it before he had two children,” Liam explained to MailOnline. “He thought he couldn’t go out there before having two children. It was his last chance to go and do something that he’s always wanted to do.”

What began as the pursuit of a lifelong passion quickly turned into a nightmare when Ryan became severely ill just weeks into his journey. The family believes he contracted a serious infection that left him bedridden with severe diarrhea and deteriorating rapidly.

In what would become his final communication with loved ones, Ryan managed a video call with his parents on June 26, during which he described his alarming symptoms. Recognizing the severity of his condition, his father immediately contacted Ryan’s hotel to request urgent medical assistance.

Tragically, by the time emergency personnel reached his room, Ryan had collapsed on his bathroom floor and suffered cardiac arrest. In a moment that offered brief hope, medics worked tirelessly for 15 agonizing minutes and successfully restarted his heart before placing him on life support.

However, Ryan’s condition continued to deteriorate at an alarming pace. He entered septic shock the following day, his kidneys began failing, and he passed away the next morning—just days before what would have been his 31st birthday.

Liam, who described his brother as “loud,” “funny,” and “my best friend,” has launched a GoFundMe campaign to support Joanne and her children during this devastating time. The fundraiser aims to help cover mounting expenses including essential living costs, potential repatriation of Ryan’s remains, medical bills, and long-term support for the young family.

In a heartfelt appeal on the donation platform, Liam wrote: “Joanne now faces the unimaginable pain of preparing to bring new life into the world whilst coping with the uncertainty of their future and the devastating knowledge that their new daughter will never meet her father. Riley, the first child who is nearly three, will not see her father again.”

The campaign description continues: “We are raising this money to help Joanne and her family manage the unknown costs ahead, including support for her two young children, keeping their roof over their head’s, medical expenses, possible repatriation for Ryan and other costs associated with raising two young children alone, one of whom is due to arrive any day now.”

Liam’s tribute to his brother paints a picture of a devoted family man whose impact extended far beyond his immediate circle. “If you knew Ryan, you would know he was a great dad and husband. His strength, humour, and warmth have touched so many people. Now it’s our turn to rally around him and his family during their darkest hour.”

The fundraising appeal concludes with a simple but powerful message: “Please consider donating whatever you can and share this page widely. Every donation, no matter how small, would make a huge difference. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”
